About This Attraction
Mercado da Ribeira represents one of Lisbon's most successful transformations of historic architecture into contemporary culinary destination. Originally inaugurated in 1882 as Lisbon's primary wholesale market for fresh fish, meat, and produce, the building served as the city's most important commercial hub for over a century. In 2014, Time Out Lisboa magazine transformed half of the historic market into Time Out Market Lisboa, the world's first editorially curated food hall, bringing together Lisbon's best chefs, restaurants, and food vendors under one iconic roof. Today, the 10,000-square-meter space operates as a dual-purpose venue: the traditional morning market continues to thrive on one side, where local vendors sell fresh fish, vegetables, fruits, and flowers from Monday to Saturday mornings, while the Time Out Market section features over 40 food stalls, 8 bars, a dozen shops, and cultural spaces. The food hall showcases Portugal's culinary excellence, from Michelin-starred chefs like Henrique Sá Pessoa and Alexandre Silva to traditional seafood vendors and artisan pastry makers. Visitors can sample everything from fresh grilled seafood and bacalhau dishes to gourmet burgers, Asian fusion, handmade pastéis de nata, and craft cocktails. The communal seating arrangement at long wooden tables creates a social dining atmosphere where locals and tourists mingle. The market also hosts the Time Out Academy cooking school, the Time Out Studio events venue, and Second Home coworking space on the upper floor. With over 3 million visitors annually, it has become one of Portugal's most popular tourist attractions while maintaining its role as a vital part of local food culture. The building's iron structure, central water corridor, and grand oriental dome remain testament to its 19th-century origins, while the modern food hall celebrates contemporary Portuguese gastronomy and innovation.
