About This Attraction
Perched at Lisbon's highest accessible point in the Graça neighborhood, the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte offers what many consider the finest panoramic view in all of Lisbon. From this elevated terrace, visitors enjoy sweeping 210-degree vistas that encompass the entire downtown Baixa district, the imposing São Jorge Castle with its ramparts tumbling down the hillside, the elegant grid of Avenidas Novas, and on clear days, all the way to the Cristo Rei statue standing sentinel across the Tagus River estuary - 5.6 kilometers distant. The viewpoint sits in the peaceful churchyard of the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Monte, a small baroque chapel dating from 1796, built on the site where a hermitage has stood since 1147. According to legend, this is the very spot where Portugal's first king, Afonso Henriques, assembled his troops before conquering Lisbon from the Moors in 1147 - making it a site of profound historical significance. The chapel is dedicated to Saint Gens, an early bishop of Lisbon martyred on this spot in 284 AD. A charming statue of Nossa Senhora do Monte (Our Lady of the Mount) gazes out over the city from the terrace. The viewpoint has long been associated with romance and young lovers, drawn by its relative seclusion atop the hill and the magical atmosphere. Today, while tuk-tuk tours frequently visit and the spot gets busy at sunset, it still retains a peaceful, almost mystical quality. The westward-facing terrace makes it ideal for watching the sun set behind the Bairro Alto hills, and as dusk falls, the lights of Lisbon gradually illuminate the cityscape below - a truly enchanting sight. Stone benches line the viewing terrace, and small shaded garden areas provide spots to rest. Musicians often play here, and pop-up bars occasionally serve drinks. The lack of permanent commercial facilities actually enhances the authentic, local feel. Unlike more touristy viewpoints, this feels like a secret Lisbon locals are reluctant to share.
