About This Attraction
The Panteão Nacional stands as one of Lisbon's most recognizable landmarks and a monument to Portuguese history and achievement. Originally conceived as the Church of Santa Engrácia in 1568 by Princess Dona Maria, daughter of King Manuel I, the building's construction became so prolonged that it gave rise to the Portuguese saying 'like the construction of Santa Engrácia' - meaning something that takes forever to complete. The church's foundation stone was laid in 1682, but the building wasn't completed until 1966 - a staggering 284 years later. This delay was partly due to a tragic legend: a young man named Simão Pires was falsely accused of stealing sacred relics from the church and was burned at the stake. In his final moments, he cursed the church, declaring it would never be finished. The curse seemed to hold true for centuries as construction repeatedly stalled due to lack of funds, political upheaval, and the devastating 1755 earthquake. The building showcases magnificent Baroque architecture with a Greek cross floor plan, soaring cupola, and white marble interior. The massive dome, completed in the 20th century, rises 80 meters high and has become an iconic part of Lisbon's skyline, visible from many parts of the city. Inside, the Pantheon honors Portugal's greatest citizens including writers (Almeida Garrett, Guerra Junqueiro), fado singers (Amália Rodrigues), presidents (Teófilo Braga, Manuel de Arriaga), and even explorers - though not their actual remains. Cenotaphs (empty tombs) honor figures like Vasco da Gama, Prince Henry the Navigator, Luís de Camões, and Pedro Álvares Cabral, whose remains lie elsewhere. The interior features stunning marble work, dramatic arches, and beautiful acoustics that occasionally host concerts. The true highlight for many visitors is ascending to the terrace level and going outside to the dome's base, where panoramic 360-degree views reveal all of Lisbon, the Tagus River, the Cristo Rei statue, and the 25 de Abril Bridge. The viewpoint is one of the finest in Lisbon. The building officially became the National Pantheon in 1916.
