About This Attraction

Quinta da Regaleira is one of Sintra's most enigmatic and fascinating estates, a masterpiece of mystery, symbolism, and architectural innovation. Built between 1904 and 1910 by the wealthy Brazilian-Portuguese millionaire António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, known as 'Monteiro dos Milhões' (Monteiro of the Millions), the estate was designed by Italian architect Luigi Manini to embody the owner's interests in alchemy, Freemasonry, Knights Templar mythology, and esoteric Christianity. The centerpiece Gothic Revival palace features ornate facades, gargoyles, and intricate stone carvings. However, the estate's true magic lies in its elaborate gardens, which contain a complex system of underground tunnels, grottoes, and mysterious structures rich in symbolic meaning. The most famous feature is the Initiation Well (Poço Iniciático), a 27-meter deep spiral staircase descending into the earth like an inverted tower, with nine platforms representing Dante's nine circles of Hell, Paradise, and Purgatory. The well connects to other grottoes and tunnels through a labyrinthine network representing an initiatory journey. The estate also features the Unfinished Well, the Waterfall Lake, the Portal of the Guardians, numerous fountains and pools, and lush vegetation creating an atmosphere of mystery and enchantment. Listed as World Heritage by UNESCO as part of the Cultural Landscape of Sintra, Quinta da Regaleira captivates visitors with its blend of natural beauty, architectural splendor, and esoteric symbolism.
