Pink Street (Rua Nova do Carvalho)

Pink Street, officially Rua Nova do Carvalho, is a short pedestrian street in Lisbon's Cais do Sodré district that has become one of the city's most iconic destinations. Originally the heart of Lisbon's red-light district, the street was lined with brothels and seedy establishments frequented by sailors for decades. In 2011, a major revitalization project transformed the street, painting the pavement a vibrant pink and rebranding it as a trendy destination for nightlife and entertainment. The transformation has been largely successful, turning Pink Street into one of Lisbon's most recognizable and photographed locations, often decorated with colorful umbrellas suspended above the pavement during summer and cultural events. The street is home to several well-loved bars and clubs that draw both locals and tourists. During the day, Pink Street is mostly quiet, with people passing through, taking photos, or stopping for a coffee. The energy completely transforms in the evening, when it becomes much livelier, attracting crowds who come for drinks, live music, and the vibrant street party atmosphere. Popular venues include Pink Wine Point for excellent Portuguese wines and live music, Pensão Amor in a former brothel with theatrical décor, and various cocktail bars creating an intimate, energetic scene. While it has shed much of its notorious past, some bars within Pink Street keep elements of its history, such as nautical or brothel themes, offering a mix of old and new and a unique atmosphere that celebrates the street's transformation while acknowledging its colorful history.
