Fado in Lisbon: Where Cruise Visitors Can Hear It

Fado is Lisbon distilled into song: one voice, one or two Portuguese guitars, and an emotion the language calls saudade, a longing for something loved and lost that has no exact translation. UNESCO lists it as intangible cultural heritage. Lisboetas simply consider it theirs, born in the taverns of Alfama and Mouraria, the very neighbourhoods that rise behind the cruise terminal.

The traditional fado house format is an evening dinner with performances between courses, which suits passengers whose ships stay late or overnight.
