Lisbon with Kids on a Cruise Port Day: What Works and What Does Not

Lisbon has what children like: a large, well-run aquarium, a castle with walls you can walk on, yellow trams, a cable car over the river and custard tarts. It also has steep hills, polished stone pavements and old-town lanes that turn into staircases. With kids, the art of a Lisbon port day is choosing the flat parts for the pushchair and the steep parts for when little legs are fresh or someone is being carried.

The guiding rule: one big thing per port day, close to the ship or reached by taxi, with a long buffer at the end. Children do not do tight connections, and neither does an all-aboard time.

Pushchair or carrier?

Lisbon's pavements are traditional calçada: small limestone cobbles, often uneven, and slippery when wet or worn smooth. A lightweight pushchair copes fine on the flat districts. In Alfama and around the castle, it becomes something you carry up steps. For under-3s, bring both if you can, or a carrier alone if the day is centred on the old town.

The Oceanário and Parque das Nações: the easiest win

For children under ten, the Oceanário de Lisboa is the safest bet in the city. It is indoors, flat, air-conditioned, and built around one enormous central tank that holds attention far longer than a monument does. Allow about two hours. It opens every day from 10:00 to 20:00.

Getting there from the ship: taxi, about 15 minutes, or the train from Santa Apolónia (about 10 minutes on foot from the terminal) to Oriente, then about 15 minutes on foot. Children aged 4 to 12 pay half fare on CP trains.

Tickets are priced by time of entry. At the time of writing, the official site lists a morning slot at €29.90 adult / €17.70 child (3–12), with late-afternoon slots the cheapest (from about €25.50 / €15.50). Under-3s are free. Book online, choose your slot, and check the price shown for your date.

Around it, Parque das Nações is the former Expo 98 site: wide riverside promenades, gardens and space to run. The Teleférico, a cable car along the river, costs €7.50 one way / €9.50 return for adults and €5.50 / €6.50 for children 3–12, free under 3. It runs from 11:00 to 19:00 until 23 October 2026, then 11:00 to 18:00. A combined Teleférico and Oceanário ticket is sold at €33.90 adult, €21.50 child.

The Pavilhão do Conhecimento science centre is also here: €15 adult, €10 for ages 3–17, €35 for a family ticket (two adults and their children), free under 2. Check its opening days before you go.

The castle: free for under-12s, hard work for pushchairs

The Castelo de São Jorge is the old-town highlight for children who like battlements. Under-12s enter free; 13–25s pay €8.50 and adults €17. It is open every day from 9:00 to 21:00 between March and October (last entry 20:30) and 9:00 to 18:00 from November to February.

Take a taxi or tuk-tuk to the gate rather than walking up with a pushchair. Inside, the grounds are gravel and uneven paths with shade under the trees, which makes it one of the better places in the centre on a hot afternoon. The wall-walks and towers are narrow, with steps and drops: hold small hands. The castle notes that access to the wall-walks and towers closes in the evening depending on daylight, so go earlier rather than later.

Trams, transport and child fares

• anchorUnder-4s travel free on Carris buses and trams and on the Metro. From 4, children need their own ticket unless they hold a personalised Portuguese travel card.
• anchorTram 28 is the famous one, and with children it is often the worst: packed, standing-room-only for most of the day, and a known pickpocket spot. The old trams are narrow with high steps, so a pushchair has to be folded. Ride a short stretch early in the morning, or skip it.
• anchorTram 15E to Belém uses modern, longer trams and is easier with a family.
• anchorTaxis and ride-hail are the pragmatic choice with small children, especially up to the castle. Do not assume a child seat will be available; if it matters to you, ask when booking or bring a travel seat.
• anchorTransport fares for the day: a single tram ride bought on board costs €3.30; with a €0.50 rechargeable card and zapping credit it is €1.72. The Lisboa Card guide explains why a child Lisboa Card (€21, ages 4–15) rarely pays off when most monuments are already free for under-12s.

Toilets, heat and snacks

• anchorToilets: use the cruise terminal's facilities before you leave. In town, free public toilets are rare. Paid attractions (the Oceanário, the monuments) have them for ticket holders; otherwise buy a drink in a café and use theirs. At Oriente, the Vasco da Gama shopping centre next to the station is a reliable stop.
• anchorHeat: from June to September, midday sun on stone pavements and treeless viewpoints is punishing. Plan the outdoor part for the morning and the indoor part (the Oceanário, a museum, lunch) for 12:00 to 15:00. Hats, sunscreen and a refillable bottle each.
• anchorShade: the castle grounds, the gardens in Belém and the riverside parks at Parque das Nações. The Alfama viewpoints have little.
• anchorSnacks: supermarkets are common in central Lisbon and cheaper than cafés for water, fruit and crisps. For a treat, a pastel de nata is small, cheap and almost universally accepted by children. Remember you cannot take food or drink into Jerónimos or the Torre de Belém.

Toddlers and under-5s (6+ hours in port). Taxi from the terminal to the Oceanário for an early slot. Two hours inside, then lunch and a run-around on the Parque das Nações promenade, with the Teleférico if energy allows. Taxi back by early afternoon for a nap on board, or a slow riverside walk to Praça do Comércio if everyone is still going. Pushchair all day; no stairs involved.

Ages 6 to 12 (6+ hours in port). Taxi or tuk-tuk to the castle gate at opening time, when it is coolest and quietest. Ninety minutes on the walls, then walk down through Alfama via the Portas do Sol viewpoint, a snack stop and the lanes below (downhill all the way; our Alfama walking route runs from the port). Lunch in the Baixa, the Arco da Rua Augusta and Praça do Comércio, then the flat walk back along the river. Carrier or no pushchair.
