Palaces in and around Lisbon for Cruise Passengers

Portugal ran an empire from Lisbon for the better part of five centuries, and its royals and aristocrats built accordingly. The palaces that survive range from restrained riverside residences, where the last kings lived until the monarchy ended in 1910, to the flamboyant hilltop fantasies of Sintra that seem to defy both gravity and good taste in the most delightful way.

For a cruise visitor, the crucial distinction is geography. Some palaces sit within Greater Lisbon and can be reached in under half an hour from the cruise terminal, making them a comfortable half-day outing. The Sintra palaces are a full expedition, spectacular but demanding, and covered in detail in our Sintra and day-trip guides.

Palace interiors in Portugal are gloriously excessive: gilded thrones rooms, walls of blue-and-white azulejo tiles, ceilings painted with magpies and swans for reasons that come with excellent stories. Guided visits typically take 60 to 90 minutes. Most palaces close one day a week, commonly Monday or Wednesday, and the popular ones sell timed tickets, so check the listing details below and book ahead rather than losing shore time in a queue.
