Lisbon Architecture: Manueline to Modern

Lisbon is an open-air textbook of architecture with a plot twist at its centre. On the morning of 1 November 1755, one of history’s most powerful earthquakes, followed by a tsunami and days of fire, erased most of the medieval city. What Lisbon built afterwards, the Baixa’s rational grid of prefabricated, earthquake-resistant buildings, was Europe’s first modern planned city centre, decades ahead of its time.

That is why Lisbon’s architecture reads as before and after. Before: the Manueline masterpieces of Belém, where carved stone ropes and sea monsters celebrate the Age of Discovery, and the stubborn medieval survivor that is the cathedral. After: elegant Pombaline streets, tiled façades in every shade of blue and green, and eventually the daring modern statements along the river.
