Most cruise passengers see Lisbon by daylight, but ships increasingly stay into the evening or overnight, and that changes everything. Lisbon at night is arguably the more authentic city: the day-trippers vanish, the light turns golden, and the town settles into the long, sociable evenings that Portuguese life is actually built around.

The classic evening progression is simple. Start with a sunset drink at a rooftop or riverside bar, many of which face the Tagus and the ships at anchor, your own vessel possibly among them. Then dinner, which locals begin at 20:00 at the earliest. Afterwards, the Bairro Alto neighbourhood turns into a street party of tiny bars where the crowd drinks outside on the cobbles, at its best from about 22:00.
