Lisbon Airport to the Cruise Terminal: Taxi, App Car or Metro?

The short answer: with suitcases, take a taxi or an app car. Lisbon airport sits inside the city, and the Lisbon Cruise Terminal at Jardim do Tabaco is roughly 8 km away, which the port itself puts at 15–20 minutes by road in normal traffic. The metro is cheap and reliable, but the route to the terminal involves two changes and a walk, which is fine with a backpack and tiresome with two large cases.

First, check which terminal building you need

Lisbon Cruise Port uses two passenger buildings on the same stretch of riverfront: the main Terminal de Cruzeiros de Lisboa at Doca Jardim do Tabaco (Av. Infante Dom Henrique), and the older Terminal de Passageiros de Santa Apolónia, a short walk east and across the avenue from Santa Apolónia railway station. Your cruise documents will say which one. Give that name, or simply "Terminal de Cruzeiros, Jardim do Tabaco", to the driver.

Road times assume normal traffic. Weekday rush hours (roughly 08:00–10:00 and 17:00–19:30) can add 15–20 minutes.

Taxi: what changes in October 2026

Lisbon's taxi pricing is in transition this year, so check the date of your arrival against the rules below.

From 15 October 2026, taxis collecting passengers at the airport arrivals area move to fixed fares by destination zone, with the meter switched off. Lisbon is split into two zones. Zone 2 includes Santa Maria Maior, the parish covering the Baixa and Alfama, and costs €19 by day and €23 at night; zone 1 (areas such as Parque das Nações and Olivais, closer to the airport) costs €16 by day and €20 at night. The fixed price already includes luggage, booking and waiting supplements. Only authorised taxis will be allowed into the arrivals pick-up area. A consumer association has questioned the scheme's legal basis, so confirm the price with the driver before you set off.

Before 15 October, taxis run on the meter. A separate national tariff reform announced in June 2026 lowers the flag-fall and scraps the luggage supplement, but its start was postponed, so you may still see a luggage charge on the receipt. On the meter, insist that it is running from the moment you leave the rank.

Whatever the date, use the official rank outside arrivals and ignore anyone offering rides inside the terminal building.

App cars: usually cheaper, not always simpler

Uber and Bolt both operate at Lisbon airport. The pick-up point is a designated ride-hailing area rather than the kerb outside arrivals, and the app shows you the walking route; follow the signs and allow ten minutes to reach it with bags. Outside peak times the app fare is often lower than a taxi, but prices rise when several flights land together, and a cheap estimate can turn into a long wait. Choose the larger car category if you have more than two big cases.

Drivers can drop you directly at the terminal entrance. Type "Terminal de Cruzeiros de Lisboa" rather than "Santa Apolónia", which may send the driver to the railway station forecourt.

Metro: the route, step by step

The airport has its own station at the end of the Red Line, and the metro runs daily from about 06:30 until around 01:00. There is no direct line to the cruise terminal, so you change twice:

The alternative is one change instead of two: Red Line to its terminus at São Sebastião, then the Blue Line all the way to Santa Apolónia. It involves more stops on the Blue Line but only one transfer, which some people prefer with luggage.

Tickets: a single Carris/Metro ticket costs €1.90 in 2026 and is valid for one hour from first validation, which covers the changes as long as you do not exit the system. It is loaded onto a reusable navegante card that costs €0.50 from the machines. You can also tap a contactless bank card at the gates (€1.92 per metro trip); use the same card to tap in and out.

The honest downside is the interchange at Baixa-Chiado, which is deep underground with long escalators, and the crowds on the Red Line at peak times. With two large cases, the few euros saved rarely feel worth it.

How early to arrive for embarkation

Your cruise line's documents set your boarding window, and they override anything general. The port's own advice is to arrive at least one to two hours ahead of your scheduled boarding time to allow for check-in and security screening.

Baggage drop-off usually opens from 09:00, but only for the ship that is actively running its drop-off at that moment, and every bag must carry that ship's luggage tag. Turning up at 08:00 does not get you on board earlier; it gets you a wait on the pavement.

If you are flying in on embarkation day, leave a generous margin. A flight that lands two hours late on a morning arrival is common enough that many passengers prefer to arrive the day before.

Hours to kill with luggage

If you land early and boarding opens mid-afternoon, or you disembark at 08:00 for an evening flight, you have a luggage problem before you have a sightseeing problem. Your options:

anchorLuggage storage shops near Santa Apolónia and the Baixa, run through the same kind of app-based networks. Check opening hours against your flight, and prefer staffed locations for large cases.

Do not drag suitcases up to Alfama. The lanes are steep, cobbled and partly stepped; with bags in tow you will see very little and enjoy less.

Disembarkation day: the reverse trip

On the way out, the terminal has Taxi Link kiosks where you can book a licensed taxi, and app cars can collect you outside. The October fixed-fare scheme applies to journeys leaving the airport, so the terminal-to-airport run remains on the meter.

Ships usually clear disembarkation in the morning, which collides with the weekday rush hour.
